Brookings Supt. calls lack of school funding ‘slap in the face’

BROOKINGS, S.D. (KJJQ) – Next year could prove challenging for school districts across South Dakota. Governor Kristi Noem has proposed no increase for K-12 education in her budget proposal.

Brookings School Superintendent Klint Willert says it’s disgraceful.

In addition, Willert says state law calls for education funding to be increased annually by either three-percent or the rate of inflation, whichever is less.

It’s possible the legislature will still approve some extra funding but Willert says this is not a good starting point.

Willert is afraid the state will again fall backwards when it comes to competitive teacher salaries.
