Brown County Burn Ban to be lifted on Monday

ABERDEEN, S.D.(Aberdeen American News)- The burn ban in Brown County will no longer be in effect come Monday.

The decision came following discussion by the Brown County Commission during its meeting this week. The burn ban has been in effect for about two months because of dry, hot weather.

Commissioners previously asked Emergency Management Director Scott Meints to draft a permit that would provide a way of approving controlled burns during a burn ban. Meints said he started the process, but does not have a proposal ready.

Commission Chairman Doug Fjeldheim started the conversation Tuesday by staying the board has discussed changes to the county’s ordinance concerning burn bans. Then Commissioner Dennis Feickert turned discussion to simply lifting the burn ban.

Meints said while northern parts of the county are green, there are still dry areas. He suggested waiting until Monday to lift the ban since the Brown County Sheriff’s Office and Brown County Communications Center will be busy with the fair this week. Commissioners agreed to that.
