Brown County Commission took first step toward potentially selling the building to be used for regional jail

ABERDEEN, S.D.(HubCityRadio)- At Thursday’s Brown County Commission meeting, which was pushed back due to the weather from Tuesday, the Commission started weighing their options for what to do with the building that to be used for a future regional jail.

Commissioner Duane Sutton discussed the plan that was set last year.

The Commission was hoping to get funding from the South Dakota legislature this year but that was defeated.  Commissioner Sutton talks about goals going forward.

Sutton emphasize that even if they sell the building, something still needs to be done to deal with overcrowding.

Commissioner Doug Fjeldheim suggest maybe a smaller building for a regional jail going forward.

Brown County Sheriff Dave Lunzman offered a suggestion about what to do if the county does sell the building and make a profit.

Commissioner Sutton talks about the first step that is needed if the county decides to sell the building.

The Brown County Commission voted in favor of making a building a surplus if it’s legal & any profits from selling the building to be used directly toward a different building for a regional jail.
