Brown County corrections officers test positive for COVID-19

ABERDEEN, S.D. (By Elisa Sand esand@aberdeennews.com) – More than one corrections officer has tested positive for COVID-19, but the Brown County Jail remains fully staffed and no inmates have tested positive.

Chief Deputy Dave Lunzman said the first corrections officer tested positive late last week. As of Thursday, Lunzman said, more than one staffer has tested positive, but he declined to say how many.

So far the jail remains fully staffed, and the estimated population of about 45 inmates has been healthy, he said. None have tested positive, he said. Lunzman credits the strict protocols that are followed to check staff daily and clear inmates before they go into the general population at the jail.

All the corrections officers wear a mask while at the jail, he said, as do inmates who leave for court appearances. Inmates are not required to wear a mask in the jail, Lunzman said.
