Brown County Sheriff Dave Lunzman file lawsuit against the county and the city of Aberdeen

ABERDEEN, S.D.(HubCityRadio)- In November, Brown County Sheriff Dave Lunzman filed a lawsuit against both Brown County and the City of Aberdeen including the Aberdeen Police Department.

All five current Brown County Commissioners and former Commissioner Doug Fjeldheim are listed in the lawsuit along with county Human Resources Director Allison Tunheim; State’s Attorney Karly Winter-Goodwin; the city of Aberdeen; the Aberdeen Police Department; and former police chief Dave McNeil.

The thirteen count indictment include the following:

alleged violations of due process, selective arbitrary treatment, denial of promotion and raises, disclosure of private personnel information during a public meeting, a hostile work environment, invasion of privacy, interference with official duties, intentional infliction of emotional distress, conspiracy to deprive rights, wrongful termination and retaliation.

Back in the Brown County meeting held on November 12th, 2024, Sheriff Lunzman expressed his disappointment of not getting a raise in 2025.

Sheriff Lunzman also address the issue of being the Brown County Coroner as well as being the sheriff.

Sheriff Lunzman asked in that meeting a request for $24,000 for that office.

Commissioner Sutton challenged Sheriff Lunzman on why he didn’t put it in the 2025 budget.

The Commission denied the request and in 2025 appointed Brian Koens as new Coroner

Sheriff Lunzman has alleged outreach by the Commission.

Commissioner Sutton also addressed in that meeting the role the commission plays with the Sheriff’s Office.

Lunzman has also sued the city of Aberdeen and their Police Department over the purchase of SIMS Cards through the use of 911 funds.

No trial date has been set and Sheriff Lunzman has requested a jury trial.
