California ballot initiative could impact pork producers

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.(KELO)- California politics are making an already tough time for the pork industry even worse.

Pork producers are losing between 20 and 40-dollars per head at the market.

Now, a California ballot initiative – Prop 12 – is requiring producers to provide more pen space for each animal.

South Dakota Pork Producers Council Executive Director Glenn Muller says it makes the industry that much tougher.

The ballot measure was approved in 2018, but challenged in court.

The Supreme Court rejected a challenge to Prop 12, so now it’s taking effect.

Pork producers are already losing money under current market conditions.

Now, they have to consider extra expenses.

The cause is California’s Prop 12…which requires producers wanting to sell in California to provide more pen space for their animals.

Pork Producers Council President Glenn Muller says it’s making for some tough decisions.

Pork Producers are already losing up to 40-dollars per head at current prices.
