Camp near Rapid City provides shelter for the homeless

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – Just outside Rapid City stands Camp Mniluzahan, (Mini-lou-za-han) a tent community for people experiencing homelessness, which has allowed media in for the first time.

Though the winter has been pretty forgiving for the homeless in West River this year, the threat of dangerous weather event remains. James Pipe On Head, who helped establish the camp with the group Creek Patrol, says they’re prepared for that situation.

Pipe On Head said the sense of community provided at the camp has helped some of its residents, many of whom struggle with drug and alcohol addiction, remain sober.

Pipe On Head said the camp focuses on humanitarian work with no regard for addiction status of the residents.

The camp has been operating since last fall, and has had between 20 and 60 residents at any given time.
