PIERRE, S.D.(KCCR)- An interim legislative committee is looking at South Dakota’s property tax structure and the burden of those taxes on everything from counties, to schools, to homeowners. District 24 Senator Mary Duvall of Pierre is Vice Chair of the Committee which met last week at the State Capitol. Duvall says hearing testimony of the critical condition some counties are in was a shock.
The state’s property tax freeze was enacted by Governor Bill Janklow in 1995. Since then costs have risen significantly, but Duvall isn’t sure lawmakers are willing to address the freeze this winter.
Before the Summer Study on Property Tax Structure and Tax Burden started meeting, Duvall wasn’t any legislation would be proposed from it, but now thinks there could be a bill or two.
Duvall says those interested more in property tax information can go to a new website set up by the Department of Revenue at sdproptax.com
