PIERRE, S.D.(KCCR)- Is the topic of urban chickens about to start clucking again in the Capital City? The idea was brought forward Tuesday night by Paul Giovanetti during the public comment period of this week’s Pierre City Commission meeting.
Giovanetti says those ordinances in other cities did not permit roosters. He says a handful of chickens can bring more benefit than just egg supplies.
The topic of urban chickens is one the Pierre City Commission confronted about 10 years ago. In April of 2014, a group called Pierre Urban Chicken Reform or PUCkR requested an ordinance change similar to Giovanetti’s desire of up to six chickens be permitted within city limits. The effort to try and allow urban chickens was repeated in 2015. Pierre Mayor Steve Harding thanked Giovanetti for addressing the Commission.
Giovanetti spoke briefly with at least one member of the Commission on the chicken issue at the end of the Commission’s meeting.
