BROOKINGS, S.D.(KJJQ)- The Brookings City Council gives first reading to an ordinance that would limit the number of video lottery establishments in the city.
There are currently 35 businesses with video lottery and a total of 308 machines.
Video lottery is tied to alcohol licenses. State law says cities cannot regulate on-sale liquor licenses — they’re allowed to have video lottery if they wish. However, it can be limited for malt beverage and wine licenses. City Clerk Bonny Foster presented a proposed ordinance based on population.
If adopted, there could not be any additional video lottery establishments connected to malt and wine licenses until the population grows.
Council Member Andrew Rasmussen wonders if anyone is currently seeking a video lottery license.
Several South Dakota cities have already set video lottery limits.
Second reading and possible action is July 11th.
