City of Sioux Falls receive report on childcare services

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.(KELO)- A shortage of childcare openings cost the state of South Dakota 150-million dollars in lost economic opportunity in 2022.

The City hired the Woods-Fuller law firm as a consultant to search for solutions.

They’re proposing three solutions…which include tax credits, zoning and licensing changes…and direct financial assistance from the city and businesses.

City Councilor Curt Soehl (SAIL).

Woods/Fuller will issue a report next month that focuses on a proposed “Tri-share” program…which could include grants for start ups and operating expenses.

The City of Sioux Falls has hired local attorney Justin Smith as a project manager to help find solutions.

Smith presented a 20-page report to councilors outlining potential solutions.

Childcare operators say direct financial assistance will be needed, but so far, councilors are leaning toward other plans, like tax credits and zoning and licensing changes.

Business owners are ready to do their part to solve the childcare crisis in South Dakota.

At the same time, Councilors appear to be uneasy with the idea of subsidizing childcare.
