City of Watertown moving closer to naming new City Manager

WATERTOWN, S.D.(KXLG)- The search for a new City Manager in Watertown is nearing its conclusion, with Mayor Ried Holien announcing at Monday’s council meeting that the Succession Planning Committee has finalized a list of candidates.

Speaking on Wednesday’s ‘From the Halls of City Hall, Mayor Holien expressed confidence in the vetting process, stating that the committee, composed of local leaders, ensured that the candidates are a good fit for Watertown, and it has been turned over to the council.

The search was conducted with the assistance of the Robert Half recruiting group. While acknowledging the firm’s expertise in finding qualified individuals, Mayor Holien stressed the importance of local input in assessing candidates’ suitability for the community.

According to the Mayor, the committee has identified three finalized candidates, with a fourth currently being finalized. He has also learned who they are.

Mayor Holien explained that feedback led to the decision not to hold a public “meet and greet” this time.

The original intention of the Council-Manager form of government is for the Mayor to be a more part-time position.

When asked if another individual would be hired for the position, Mayor Holien also addressed the potential re-establishment of an “Assistant City Manager” position, stating that it is unlikely to be approved by the City Council.

The city aims to finalize the hiring process as early as next week, with a potential announcement scheduled for around June 16th, following the completion of contract negotiations.
