Clay County working on their own regional jail

YANKTON, S.D.(WNAX)- While the South Dakota legislature debates possible funding for regional jails, Clay County will be working on its own new facility.

Voters in November approved a thirty nine million dollar bond issue for a new combined law enforcement center.

Clay County Sheriff Andy Howe says their jail could fit into a regional concept.

Howe says they had planned to work with Turner County in any case.

Howe says many counties are looking for jail space.

A legislative summer study committee had come up with several recommendations on regional jails for the 2023 session.
