Codington County awarded grant to address substance abuse disorders

WATERTOWN, S.D.(Press Release)- Local Watertown community leaders proudly announce that Codington County has been awarded the Comprehensive Opioid, Stimulant, and Substance Use Program (COSSUP) grant from the Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance. This significant funding, amounting to $1 million over three years, will support programs aimed at serving justice-impacted individuals with substance use disorders.

Codington County Community Services Director Sara Foust spoke at the County Commissioners meeting this morning.

The grant had to be officially accepted by the Commissioners, which received unanimous approval.

The COSSUP grant is awarded to communities demonstrating a strong commitment to social policy innovation and the improvement of public welfare.

This grant will enable the Reaching Rural Fellows to provide diversion, deferment, and services with peer recovery coaches, aiming to reduce substance use, abuse, and dependence in Codington County.

Foust explains more details about the grant.

Foust and the team aren’t done applying for grants.

This funding represents a considerable step forward in addressing substance use disorders and their intersection with the justice system in Codington County. By focusing on the root causes, the initiative aims to create sustainable change, reduce the number of individuals re-entering the justice system, and promote a healthier community overall.
