WATERTOWN, S.D.(KXLG)- During a Tuesday’s Codington County Commissioners meeting, discussion was sparked by Commissioner Myron Johnson regarding the intersection of mental health and public safety, particularly in the wake of recent national events.
Johnson voiced concerns about a perceived increase in violent incidents.
Johnson asked when you can institutionalize these people who have mental issues. Community Service Director Sara Foust responded.
Johnson also expressed concern for individuals who could lie about mental illness. Commissioner Troy VanDusen responded that it could affect your license.
Codington County States Attorney Alison Bakken later responded to Johnson’s comments, acknowledging that the county faces a mental health crisis.
Bakken reassured the commission that the county takes firearm and weapon violations very seriously.
The conversation also touched on the rising cost of court-appointed attorney fees.
