Colman man identified in fatal crash west of Hartford

HARTFORD, S.D. (Press Release) – A Colman, S.D. man has been identified as the person who died Saturday night in a motorcycle-pickup crash west of Hartford.

A 2000 Dodge Ram 2500 pickup was stationery in the eastbound lane on South Dakota Highway 38 waiting to make a left-hand turn into a business. An eastbound Harley Davidson FXDWGI motorcycle failed to slow down in time and struck the rear of the pickup.

Eric Top, the 43-year-old motorcycle driver, was not wearing a helmet and was thrown from the motorcycle. He was airlifted to a Sioux Falls hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Both occupants of the pickup, John Henjum of Harrisburg, S.D., who was the 37-year-old driver, and the 44-year-old female passenger from Sioux Falls were not injured. Both were wearing seat belts.

South Dakota Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash. All information is only preliminary at this time.

The Highway Patrol is part of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
