Committee approves proposal to allow voters to decide on sports gambling

PIERRE, S.D. (KJJQ) – The Senate Local Government Committee approves a proposal that would allow the voters to decide on sports gambling in the state.

Senator Bob Ewing says his joint resolution would bring a constitutional amendment to the voters.

Ewing says they would also like to offer online sports wagering.

The resolution was opposed by Matt Krogmann, representing the South Dakota Licensed Beverage Dealers and Gaming Association. He says they are 100% in favor of sports wagering in South Dakota, however:

Ewing says this measure would leave it up to the legislature to decide if sports betting would be allowed statewide or only in Deadwood.

The resolution passed 5-2 and now heads to the Senate floor.
