Congressman Johnson provide update on upcoming Farm Bill

WATERTOWN, S.D.(KXLG)- Every five years or so, Congress considers, discusses, and eventually passes a new version of what’s known as the farm bill. It’s a simple name for a massive law that governs a lot of agricultural and food programs. Congress completed the majority of the bill last year, but according to Representative Dusty Johnson, there are still some sections that need to be hammered out in the house before it can pass to the senate.

There has been a delay on getting the bill passed due to fighting between the parties.

Johnson says that he believes the bill is a good one, designed to take care of rural America, which is why he believes it will pass.

One provision that has slowed down the bill’s passage deals with pesticides. That provision would prevent states and courts from penalizing pesticide makers for failing to include warnings on their labels about health effects that go beyond those formally recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency.

He says the labeling needs to be science based and representatives on both sides of the aisle agree.

Another provision in the bill important to Johnson would allow for the sale of E-15 fuel year round.

He says that demand will mean the US worrying less about Saudi Arabian oil fields and more about US corn fields.
