Council members given clarity on conflict-of-interest questions

ABERDEEN, S.D. (Aberdeennews.com) – Three members of the Aberdeen City Council were recently given clarity on their conflict-of-interest questions.

The Aberdeen Board of Ethics determined two councilmen whose spouses work at local elementary schools do not pose a conflict of interest.

Councilmen Clint Rux and Dave Bunsness both asked if it is a violation of the policy or of city code to vote on payments made to the Aberdeen School District.

The district has received payments from the city in the past two years for Cable 7 broadcasting, construction materials for the construction of cabins at Wylie Park, crossing guards, a prevention partner and tax distributions.

Bunsness and Rux were told there is no conflict unless their spouses received a direct financial benefit as a result of the payment.
