Brown County commission approves new voting technology

ABERDEEN, S.D.(Aberdeen American News)- The next time Brown County residents head to the polls to submit their votes, the process will have a new look.

The KNOWiNK Poll Pad will introduce a new electronic voter check-in and verification process and is a secure Apple iPad application, according to the company’s website. Voters will be able to scan their different types of identification or manually search their names. The new technology is also able to track absentee voters.

“We gave it some rigorous testing and we did the same testing on it that we would do for a normal election, making sure that all the different types and qualifications of voters are in there,” Brown County Auditor Cathy McNickle told county commissioners.

Commissioners approved the purchase of the poll pads by unanimous vote during their Tuesday meeting at the courthouse. The cost is $46,000.
