County Commissioners debate salaries increases

WATERTOWN, S.D.(KXLG)- A recent meeting of county commissioners discussed potential salary adjustments for board members. The topic arose during a broader budget review for the upcoming fiscal year.

Commissioner Lee Gabel introduced a proposal for a 1% increase.

Commissioner Myron Johnson disagrees with the estimated $5,000 on the A/V upgrade as it will create “clutter,” he also disagrees with the 1%.

Commissioner Gabel explains the suggested 1%.

Gabel reminded the Commissioners this is the time to discuss it until the finalization in September.

Johnson expressed the desire to eliminate the $5,000 A/V upgrade proposal and maintain the 4% rate salary increase for the Commissioners, which was also given to county staff.

Commissioner Troy VanDusen commented.

VanDusen had no concerns with the A/V upgrade. At the January 8, 2024, meeting, a 4% increase was approved, with VanDusen as the lone no vote for $2,144.02 a month. Additionally, a salary increase of 5.5% was approved for 2023 for Commissioners, the same as provided to all other County employees. VanDusen was again the lone no-vote.

Gabel suggested a compromise and proposed 2%, reminding them it’s not a final budget approval vote. VanDusen and Commissioner Randy Schweer audibly agreed.
