ABERDEEN, S.D. (By Elisa Sand esand@aberdeennews.com) – Brown County’s highway superintendent said one of the asphalt overlay projects planned in 2021 is a direct result of adding funding back into his department’s budget.
Dirk Rogers plans one bridge replacement and four asphalt overlay projects next year. Of those, he said, 6 miles of overlay planned on County Road 5 from 396th Avenue to 402nd Avenue is the result of restoring highway department funding. That’s in the northern part of the county west of Hecla.
The county highway department took a $3.5 million budget this year as commissioners evaluated the best way to address a $4 million deficit when crafting the budget. That reduced the highway budget from $9.32 million to about $6 million.
But the approved highway department budget for 2021 is back to $9 million.
