WATERTOWN, S.D.(KXLG)- For the first time in many years, Watertown will have an official curling club to promote a fun, unique sport that offers another way to introduce people to the brand-new Prairie Lakes Ice Arena. President Michael Heuer and Vice President Laura Moore:
Heuer thanks the Watertown Parks, Recreation, and Forestry Department for caring for them because they belong to the department and saved the club what would have been a high upfront cost. On average, a new set of stones costs between $8,000 and $12,000.
Heuer talks about the mission of the new curling club.
Initially, it would be a 10-week league and cost $75 without purchasing any extra equipment. VP Moore talks about receiving help from another club.

The curling club is in “fundraising mode” right now and has a raffle planned that will be announced soon, which may involve Crokinole.
According to Heuer, the cities along Interstate 29 from Fargo, ND, down to Yankton, SD, all have curling clubs, including Brookings and Sioux Falls. With more accessibility, the sport continues to grow.
Moore talks more about the fundraising needs.
Packages available for sponsors can include stickers on the stones and the sweepers, among other options. The sport is something anyone can play, regardless of athletic ability or age. It’s a sport that involves community and may even offer an opportunity to “grab a pint to decompress” together after a match.
The immediate need is to get players and teams interested while completing the fundraising efforts to get the league off the ground and on the ice.
