Customs & Border Protection confiscate over fifty fake IDs heading to Brookings

BROOKINGS, S.D.(KJJQ)- The Brookings Police Department assisted Homeland Security Investigations with an investigation where more than 50 fake ID’s destined for Brookings were intercepted by Customs and Border Protection.

Brookings Police Detective Adam Smith says an individual had ordered ID’s for themself and several friends for the purpose of purchasing alcohol underage. According to Smith, these types of ID’s are commonly put to such use, however they have also been used by individuals involved in serious criminal activity.

Because of the nature and quality of these ID’s and their linkage to the Federal REAL ID program, possession can be a federal offense. It can also be a state felony or misdemeanor.

The investigation into the fraudulent documents is ongoing.
