Davison County Commission looking to move Juneteenth Day to day after Thanksgiving

MITCHELL, S.D.(KMIT)- Does a holiday lose its meaning if it is celebrated on a different day than originally intended?  That question was discussed at a recent Davison County Commission meeting.  The holiday in question is Juneteenth, which recently became a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the US and is celebrated in June.  The issue was brought to the commission by Davison County Correction Officer Mychal Deas (dees) after Davison County instead allowed its employees to take the Friday after Thanksgiving off.  Commissioner Randy Reider (rider).

Deas said moving the holiday takes away its meaning.

Commissioner Denny Kiner said the holiday should be celebrated when intended.

The commission will revisit the issue for future years.
