WATERTOWN, S.D.(KXLG)- South Dakota’s 2026 governor’s race enters its next phase following Tuesday’s landmark runoff. Incumbent Republican Governor Larry Rhoden is set to face Democratic nominee Dan Ahlers in the general election on November 3.  Ahlers introduced himself to local voters and outlined his background.

Ahlers also served for 6 years in the South Dakota legislature working on the appropriations committee. When the opportunity to run for governor came up, Ahlers discussed it with his family and they all decided it was the right time to run, as South Dakota is in need for a change.

One issue Ahlers is especially concerned about is education funding, feeling that the state has an obligation to fund education, and as the state consistently has a surplus, those funds should be invested in education and other programs.

Another topic that saw a lot of traction this past legislative session and during the recent election cycle is property taxes. Ahlers says that the idea of eliminating property taxes entirely is not a realistic solution.

He adds however, that the plan passed by this year’s legislature simply put the burden on those that can least afford it.

According to Ahlers, what haven’t been talked about are the programs that currently exist to lower property taxes.

Ahlers also thinks work needs to be done to look at how homes are currently being assessed, as valuations of homes vary widely throughout communities, counties and the state.
