Democratic numbers in legislature fall to lowest level since early 1950s

YANKTON, S.D. (WNAX) – Following this week’s election, Democratic numbers in the South Dakota legislature have fallen to the lowest level since the early 1950s. There will be three Democratic Senators and eight Democratic Representatives.

One of those, Representative Ryan Cwach of Yankton, says he learned about cooperation in his first two years in Pierre.

Cwach says the low numbers are a concern.

Cwach says a viable minority can be a check on questionable legislation.

Cwach was one of two House candidates on the District 18 ballot. Republican Mike Stevens will be returning as a Representative.
