Details emerge in Brookings stabbing death

BROOKINGS, S.D. (KJJQ) – The investigation continues into a rural Brookings stabbing that resulted in the death of a man.

Brookings County Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring says it was reported as a fight and stabbing at about 5:12 p.m. Saturday on the 4200 block of Western Avenue South.

The victim, identified as 37-year-old Justin Proctor of Brookings, had a single stab wound to the lower abdomen. He was taken by ambulance to the Brookings hospital, then airlifted to a Sioux Falls hospital where he died several hours later.

The other party involved, a 15-year-old male, had fled the scene. He turned himself in at the Brookings County Sheriffs Office a short time later. He was interviewed by law enforcement, examined at the Brookings Hospital for injuries sustained in the fight, and then released.

Brookings County States Attorney Dan Nelson provides the details.

We asked Nelson if this is a case of self-defense?

Nelson says they do not believe there is any further danger to the public.

An autopsy on Proctor was conducted Monday. The juvenile’s name is not being released.
