Donald Glen Steward, age 90, went home to be with The Lord on Wednesday, July 17th, 2024 at Avera Mother Joseph Manor in Aberdeen, South Dakota.

The funeral service will be 10:30 am, Saturday, July 27, 2024 at the Richland Church, Mina with Pastor Jason Dignan officiating. Burial will follow at Richland Cemetery, Mina with military honors by Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post 24. The service will be livestreamed on the Richland Church YouTube channel (see richlandchurch.org).

The visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Don was born December 6th, 1933 to Douglas and Althia (Flint) Steward on the farm south of Chelsea, South Dakota. He attended rural elementary school in Wesley Township and in Chelsea. He attended Northville High School and graduated as salutatorian in 1952. At that time, he purchased a house and farmland four miles south of his childhood home where he farmed for the rest of his life. In January 1954, he was drafted and served in the anti-aircraft division of the Army. He served 2 years and was honorably discharged on January 20th, 1956.

He married Mildred Miller of Groton, SD on June 11th, 1956. They lived on the farm until the fall of 2021 when they moved to Aberdeen, SD. They celebrated 68 years of marriage and were blessed with three sons, Daryl, Verlyn and Allan.

Don and Mildred were lifelong members of the Richland Church near Mina, SD. Don served his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, at the church in many areas including Sunday School teacher and board member but his favorite position was usher and greeter. He loved greeting people at the door with a welcoming smile as they arrived.

Don served his community as Wesley Township board member for nearly 60 years. He also served on the Richland and Athol cemetery boards. Don loved the farm and his community. His pleasure during retirement was going to the Chelsea Cenex to get coffee and discuss farming with all of the local farmers. He loved telling stories and visiting with neighbors.

Grateful for having shared Don’s life are his wife of 68 years, Mildred Steward; 3 sons: Daryl (Darla) Steward, Verlyn (Kelly) Steward, Allan (Laura) Steward; grandchildren: Dustin (Chrissy) Steward, Dena (David) Scott, Derek (Hannah) Steward, Gregory (Elizabeth) Steward, Kayla (Joshua) Smith, Ethan Steward, Alyssa (Levi) Dinger; great-grandchildren: Malia Steward, Nolan Steward, Adelyn Steward, Eli Steward, Abigail Scott, Abraham Scott, Issac Steward, Ada Steward, James Steward, Remington Steward, Althea Steward, Prerna Steward, Miller Kate Smith, Molly Smith, Althea Dinger; and brother: Orville (Bonnie) Steward and many nieces and nephews.

Proceeding Don in death: his parents Douglas and Althia Steward, his sister and brother in-law Ellen and Elton Palmer, his brother and sister in-law Paul and Lois Steward, his brother Lorin Steward, and two grandchildren Joshua and Aubrey Steward.
