Dorothy was born on April 26, 1929, on the family farm in Spring Township near Doland, SD, to John F. Hahn and F. Beryl (Neville) Hahn.
Dorothy’s childhood was shaped by simple country living. She attended the Nelson School near her home. She recalled a frightening buggy ride that came too close to a water-filled ditch, which left her with a lifelong fear of water. One of her fondest memories was learning to play softball with Jerry Rueschenberg. She loved playing softball her whole life and played until she was 30 years old.
She later attended Doland High School, where she lived in the dormitory and greatly enjoyed that independence. While in high school, she fell in love with Larry Thompson, and the two were married on Valentine’s Day 1947 and graduated from high school soon after.
Dorothy and Larry were blessed with six children, though their time together was tragically cut short when Larry passed away in 1954, just before the birth of their sixth child.
Dorothy faced life with strength, resilience, and determination as she raised her six children while also giving generously of her time to her community. She served as a Boy Scout leader, led the Learning Lassies 4-H Club, and was active as president of both the Study Club and the Rebekah’s. She was a devoted member of the Doland United Methodist Church for over 75 years, serving in many ways and building lifelong friendships.
A special moment she always cherished was in 1965, when she served as a chaperone for the Doland High School band, proudly watching as the band, along with some of her own children, marched in the Presidential Inaugural Parade, cheering on Johnson and Humphrey.
Dorothy was deeply woven into the fabric of her community. She served more than 25 years as election supervisor for the Doland precinct, completed two terms on the Doland City Council, and was known to many as the town Avon lady. She also enjoyed fixing hair and painting ceramics with friends and family. Dorothy was a jack of all trades who found joy in staying busy and connected to others.
In 1972, Dorothy married Gordon Thompson, the older brother of her first husband, Larry. They shared years together until Gordon’s passing in 1983.
Dorothy also found fulfillment in her work with the Doland School System for 17 years, helping students learn and grow, forming connections that extended beyond the classroom.
In her later years, Dorothy moved to Redfield. There, she continued her love of gardening, especially her flowers, and enjoyed being part of the Red Hat Society. Most of all, she cherished every moment spent with her growing family: children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
Dorothy is lovingly remembered by five of her children: Christine Moore of Watertown, SD; Roxie (Ron) Decker of Redfield, SD; Deb Thompson of Minneapolis, MN; Stan (Dona) Thompson of Sioux Falls, SD; and Larry (Liz) Thompson of Martinsburg, WV.
She is also survived by her grandchildren: James (Lisa), Shelley (Christopher), John G. (Susan), Erin (Brian), Alice, John S, Kyle (Colby), Joshua (Surya), Michael (Susan), Matthew (Dawn), Jessica (Jay), and Josh (Sarah); her great-grandchildren: Stephanie, Samantha, Kannon, Kimberly, Ashley, CJ, Payton, Aries, Kailea, Madisyn, Montana, Mitchell, Malakai, Ryan, Decker, Peyton, Kiaan, Sai, Chloe, Calah, Matthan, Micah, Erika, Tyler, Keller, Taylor, Alaina, Chase, Austin, and Jocelyn; and her great-great-grandchildren: Ryder, Brynlee, Boone, Eleanor, Valerie, Ryland, Cooper, and Arielle. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Corry.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, John and Beryl Hahn; husbands Larry and Gordon Thompson; son John; sister Margaret (Don) Mehlberg; sister Phyllis (Cecil) Kirkwood; brother Maurice (Mary) Hahn; sister-in-law Elaine (George) Hanson and former husband David Barkema; and sister-in-law Karen (Dix) Wannamaker and former husband Jack Nelson.
Dorothy will be remembered for her strength, her deep love for family, and the many quiet ways she cared for those around her. Her life was one of dedication, resilience, and a lasting impact on everyone who knew her. She will be deeply missed, forever loved, and always remembered by all who knew her.
