Drought’s impact on the West River’s cattle industry

RAPID CITY, S.D.(KOTA)- Drought devastated much of West River’s cattle operations over the summer, and shows no signs of letting up in the New Year.

Adele Harty is a cow/calf field specialist with the South Dakota State University West River extension, and operates a small cow/calf operation near Rapid City.

Harty shared the view of the situation from ground-level.

Harty said tough decisions had to be made in the most affected areas.

Harty said a little long-term planning can go a long way.

Harty said with an unrelenting drought, looking forward to the next season.
