PIERRE, S.D. (WNAX) – An option that helps some people avoid prison time and saves the state money appears to be making progress.

South Dakota Supreme Court Chief Justice David Gilbertson helped start drug courts, which are now used across the state.

Gilbertson says it’s a savings all around.

Gilbertson says the process has proven itself.

Gilbertson will step down from the court and retire in January.
