Drug store robbery ends in suicide in Custer

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KBHB) – A drug store robbery in Rapid City ended with a car chase and suicide Tuesday. The man shot himself after a three hour standoff with Custer police.

Around 3 p.m. MT police responded to a call at Boyds Drug Mart on East Saint Patrick. Witnesses said a man pulled a gun at the prescription counter and demanded drugs, then left the facility by car.

Then around 3:45, a Deputy of the Custer County Sheriff’s Office spotted the vehicle southbound on U.S. Highway 16/385 north of Custer. Deputies pursued the vehicle south into Custer, where it turned right to head west on Mt. Rushmore Road. Deputies spun the car out near Mount Rushmore Road and N. 2nd Street.

As they surrounded the car, officers saw the suspect holding a firearm to their person. After a three-and-a-half-hour standoff, the man self-inflicted a fatal gun shot. He was taken to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead.

The man’s identity is being withheld until notification of next-of-kin.

The robbery, pursuit and standoff investigations are ongoing.
