Eva Marie Steen was born on March 26, 1943, on her family farm in Cleveland Township, SW of Ipswich.  The daughter of William and Margaret (Kocker) Steen, she attended country school for 8 years.  She went to Ipswich Public School, graduating in 1961, and went on to further her education at Northern State College in Aberdeen, studying mathematics.  She was offered a job with Aberdeen National Bank after she graduated from high school.  Changing names several times, what would come to be known as US Bank, was her second home, and she greatly enjoyed both customers and fellow employees until she retired in 2004 after 43 years of service.  She started as a teller and worked her way up, retiring as the bank’s Auditor.  Eva greatly enjoyed traveling to her nieces and nephews’ sporting events and could always be counted on to be in the stands cheering them on.  She was very active in their lives.

She loved cats and shared many years with Snoopy and Moe.  Eva was active in many things.  She played softball, handball, and tennis, but her biggest sporting loves were bowling and golf.  She could be seen at the bowling alley and golf courses often.  Her love of the sport was evident in almost everything she did.  She and her friends would often travel for both bowling and golf tournaments. In 2004, Eva was inducted into the South Dakota Bowling Hall of Fame due to her meritorious service, including being a league member for over 50 years, serving in various leadership roles, including president and vice president.  She began bowling because the bank had a bowling team and needed a substitute.  She was a decorated golfer as well, which was evident by the many awards, jewelry, pins, and tournament crystal she would proudly display in her home. One could argue her most prized sporting accomplishments were her hole-in-one at Lee Park and being a 600 Club Member in bowling.  She golfed until her health began to fail, and then would fill the void of being on the course by watching golf on TV.

She was a die-hard Pittsburgh Steelers fan and would cheer or yell loudly whenever they were on TV.  She loved the outdoors and loved her hometown of Aberdeen, South Dakota.  She was on the Wylie Park board and was proud of the work she did while on the board. She enjoyed working at the horse races in Aberdeen. She will also be remembered by her sharp wit and sense of humor. Friendships were very important to Eva and she maintained close ties to many people that she worked, golfed, and bowled with.

She is survived by her sister Willa Gisi of Ipswich; nephews: Steve (Nicole) Gisi of Ipswich, Bill Steen Jr. of Omaha, NE, Christopher Steen of Frazee, MN; nieces Michelle (Terry) Wolf of Sioux Falls, SD, Terry (Jason) Owens of Pearland, TX, Kathy (Pat Gross) Mitzel of Aberdeen, SD, and Rhonda Wiley of Litchfield Park, AZ. She is also survived by great nephews: Mark Gisi, Isaac Wolf, Jacob Wolf, Sam Wolf, and Jace Owens; and great nieces Erica Mitzel, Maggie Wolf, Emma Steen, Eden Steen, Amelia Steen, Isabelle Steen, Sierra Owens, and Devyn Wiley.

Eva is preceded in death by her sister Wilma Steen; brother Bill Steen; two infant brothers and an infant sister; parents William and Margaret Steen; and nephew Jamie Steen.

The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to Dr. Biegler and the Avera Clinic Staff for their loving care of Eva.
