Farm group leader concerned US Trade Rep focusing on climate change with trade policy

SOUTH DAKOTA(WNAX)- US Trade Representative Katherine Tai says one of her priorities with trade negotiations is to make carbon sequestration the new global standard. South Dakota Farm Bureau President Scott VanderWal has some concerns because that it could make it difficult to sign new or advance current trade deals.

He says pushing carbon sequestration and climate change goals in trade pacts would complicate those negotiations.

VanderWal says it’s more important the Biden administration come forward with their trade goals and ensure that the current deal with China is working now that they’re purchasing more U.S. product and implementing the USMCA deal.

VanderWal says the Biden trade team also needs to pursue getting involved with the Comprehensive Transpacific Partnership and solidifying our current bilateral agreement with Japan.
