CONDE, S.D. (WNAX) – Congress continues to work on trying to find some way to pass disaster aid for farmers and ranchers impacted by blizzards and flooding. While the Senate is bogged down on an argument over aid to Puerto Rico, the House is hoping to come up with a new disaster package possibly as soon as today.
South Dakota Farmers Union President Doug Sombke says farmers all over and especially in the Northern Plains are hurting from a depressed economy as well as the natural disasters.
He says it’s a long term problem just to keep farmers and ranchers in business.
Sombke says those that have crop insurance will be able to get some assistance, but more will be needed.
One of the provisions House members are considering in their new disaster aid package would provide funding for those who’ve had damage to stored crops.
