ABERDEEN, S.D.(Press Release) – Fire Prevention Week is Oct. 6-12, and the theme is “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!”
Smoke alarms reduce the risk of dying in a home fire by more than half (54 percent). Meanwhile, three out of five fire deaths happen in homes with either no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.
Fire safety education isn’t just for school children. Teenagers, adults, and the elderly are also at risk in fires, making it important for every member of the community to take some time every October during Fire Prevention Week to make sure they understand how to stay safe.
Key smoke alarm safety tips and guidelines:
- Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area (like a hallway), and on each level (including the basement) of the home.
- Make sure smoke alarms meet the needs of all family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
- Test smoke alarms at least once a month by pushing the test button.
- Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old.
If you need smoke alarms, Aberdeen Fire Rescue has a small supply of smoke alarms to give out. You can also contact Aberdeen Fire Rescue for help installing or replacing alarms. Call 605-626-7024 to speak to a firefighter about smoke alarms.
Fire Prevention Week is a national program sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association to promote fire safety.
