First officer involved shooting in Sioux Falls took place

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.(KELO)- An officer involved shooting took place Friday morning in north central Sioux Falls.

Shortly after 9:30 p.m. Thursday, a man discovered someone rummaging through his vehicle.

Police Chief Jon Thum:

The man called police and provided them with a thorough description of the suspect.

About four hours later, police were on scene of another call when an officer saw someone walking by that matched the description of the suspect in the previous incident.

The officer attempted to make contact with the individual who refused to cooperate and took off on foot.

The suspect, 35-year-old Sean Kilbourne, was treated for his injuries and released back into police custody.

He’s currently lodged in the Minnehaha County Jail, charged with Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon and a parole violation.

The investigation has been turned over to the state Division of Criminal Investigation, and the officer who fired his weapon has been placed on administrative leave.
