Former head of PHMSA to tour South Dakota promoting the co2 pipeline

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.(KELO)- Summit Carbon Solutions is gearing up for the battle over carbon capture pipelines in the region.

They’ve hired Brigham McCown, a former federal pipeline safety administrator.

He says there’s only been one CO-2 pipeline leak in 50-years of operation.

McCown will be in Lincoln County Tuesday meeting with a group to work on safety regulations.

Summit is preparing to reapply for a pipeline after being denied earlier this year.

They lost the first time around…but they aren’t giving up.

Summit Carbon Solutions wants to build a Carbon Capture pipeline system through several states, including South Dakota.

As part of its effort to get back on track, the company has hired Brigham McCown, the former acting head of the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety administration.

He’ll be in South Dakota this week, in an effort to reassure people that the proposed project is safe.

McCown says CO-2 pipelines have been operating for 50 years with only one incident.

He says that was caused because the pipeline company wasn’t in compliance with safety regulations.
