Former NSU OC Named UND Interim Head Coach

GRAND FORKS, ND (fightinghawks.com) – On the heels of Saturday’s coaching announcement, North Dakota Director of Athletics Bill Chaves announced current offensive coordinator Isaac Fruechte will be the interim head coach of UND football, effective immediately.

Fruechte joined North Dakota this January and helped the Fighting Hawks have the No. 13 red-zone scoring offense in the FCS, scoring points 89.6 percent of the time when reaching the red-zone. Fruechte’s offense also currently ranks No. 18 nationally in third down conversion percentage (45.6 percent), No. 20 in time of possession (31:32) and No. 25 in rushing offense (186.9 yards per game). In 2024, North Dakota put up over 400 yards of offense three times, highlighted by 601 yards in the 72-35 win over Murray State.

Prior to joining UND, Fruechte’s stops include Winona State, Northern State, Northern Iowa and Wisconsin-La Crosse. He spent two seasons (2015-17) as a wide receiver with the Minnesota Vikings and also had a six-game stint with the Detroit Lions in 2016. During his collegiate playing career, he spent three seasons at receiver at Minnesota (2012-14).

Fruechte will serve as the interim head coach while the national search for North Dakota’s next head coach takes place.
