Former Presentation College MBB Coach Lands At VCSU

VALLEY CITY, ND (VCSUVikings.com) – The Valley City State University men’s basketball program has added two new coaches for the 2024-25 season, head coach Ryan Montgomery announced.

Trevor Flemmer has joined the staff as a full-time assistant coach, and Jacob Toepfer has been hired as a graduate assistant coach.

“Trevor and Jacob both bring strong basketball backgrounds to our program,” said Montgomery. “As a former head coach and top assistant coach for NAIA programs in our area, Trevor has immediate knowledge of our competition and region that will allow him to hit the ground running at VCSU.”

A native of Mitchell, S.D., Flemmer joins VCSU after working the previous two seasons as head coach for regional NAIA programs. He comes from Bethany College (Kansas) where he was the head coach in the 2023-24 season. Prior to that, Flemmer was the head coach at Presentation College in 2022-23 where he had to navigate through a season while the school announced its closing mid-season.

From 2018-2022, Flemmer was an associate head coach, interim head coach, and assistant coach at Dakota State University, where he helped lead the Trojans to the North Star Athletic Association championship game in 2020-21. He also had coaching stops at Briar Cliff University and Riverland Community College. He played college basketball at Presentation College and earned a degree in exercise science.

Flemmer replaces previous assistant coach Tim Wagner, who recently accepted a coaching job at Rock Valley College.

Toepfer joins the program as a graduate assistant coach this season. He completed his undergraduate studies at Beloit College in the spring of 2023 with a degree in English and media studies. While at Beloit, Toepfer played on the men’s basketball team for two years before a career ending injury.

Toepfer then became the lead assistant coach at Milton High School in Wisconsin. In his two seasons, the Redhawks were well over .500 and produced numerous college athletes.

A native of Lake Mills, Wis., Toepfer also has experience coaching AAU for a few seasons with the Wisconsin Swing program.
