Fort Pierre City Council approve lease with US Army Corps of Engineers

FORT PIERRE, S.D.(KCCR)- The Fort Pierre City Council has approved a lease with the U-S Army Corps of Engineers for Corps lots in Fort Pierre near the 5th Avenue boat ramp.  The lots will be used for a year-round fish cleaning station and off-street parking for boat trailers and vehicles pulling them.  The Council held a public hearing so neighbors could express their thoughts.  Travis Frost’s property borders the proposed lot for the station and worried about possible odor.

Frost suggested moving the station across the street.  That would reduce off-street parking from 26 to 18 spots, but would keep anglers on the same side of the street as the station.  Moving the fish station to the Frost location would require a new lease and setting the project back a year.  Merlin Schwinler says odor shouldn’t be an issue with modern construction.

Councilman Scott Deal says prevailing winds should minimize impact from smells.

The station is being funded privately and approximately 60-percent of the goal has been raised so far.
