Governor Rhoden address property tax relief bills he support

PIERRE, S.D.(KBRK)- Gov. Larry Rhoden Thursday announced his full support for two property tax reduction measures.

He said lawmakers did a good job filtering through a lot of different suggestions.

Rhoden said having a myriad of separate proposals made the legislative process work.

Senate Bill 96 would allow counties to lower property taxes by implementing an optional sales tax increase. The bill was passed in the Senate on a 20-14 vote on Feb. 23 and advanced by the House State Affairs committee on March 4 on a 12-1 vote.

Senate Bill 245 would channel money — estimated to exceed $100 million — from the state’s sales tax increasing from 4.2 to 4.5 percent in July of 2027. That measure was passed in the Senate on a 32-1 vote on Feb. 24 and advanced by the House State Affairs committee on March 4 on an 11-2 vote.

Both measures now move to the house floor. The governor’s comments came during a Thursday morning press conference.
