Grass fire reported in Stanley County

FORT PIERRE, S.D.(DRGNews)- Volunteer firefighters from a handful of different departments spent around four hours Thursday afternoon  in 100+ degree heat to extinguish a fire that took off into a wheat field in Stanley County.

Fort Pierre Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief Tye Odden was the incident commander at the scene. He says it was around 3:30pm CT when they got called to the fire about one mile west of Highway 63 near Hayes.

Odden says fortunately the fire did not jump over the highway.

Most of eastern and central South Dakota currently have a Grassland Fire Danger Index in the low and moderate categories, but the forecast calls for 10-20mph winds and temperatures in the 90s and low 100s into next week.

Under those conditions, Odden says things will dry down quickly, thus increasing the potential for wildfires.

Odden says the fire covered approximately 160 acres.
