Group looking to make South Dakota primaries open beginning in 2026

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.(HubCityRadio)- On Wednesday the South Dakota Open Primaries submitted their bid to start a petition to the Legislative Research Council to make primaries open starting in 2026.

Chairman Joe Kirby talks about trying to put this in place back in 2016 but was defeated and the lessons they learned from it.

Kirby explains what the proposed constitutional amendment will be about.

Kirby explains that could lead to more candidates for various offices.

Kirby compare this proposal to what was used in Alaska for the first time in their elections.

Kirby talks about the support he’s getting from fellow Republicans.

The LRC now has fifteen working days to decide on it.  Kirby expect to hear a response back by Christmas.
