PIERRE, S.D.(KJJQ)- A bill that was in response to a drag show at SDSU was killed in a Senate committee Tuesday morning.
HB 1116 would ban the use of school district, state university, or state property from hosting “lewd or lascivious content.”
The bill’s sponsor, Republican Representative Chris Karr of Sioux Falls, says the bill gives the Board of Regents and other public school officials the authority to ban such events. Karr says it uses state law to define lewd and lascivious.
Opponent Garrett Satterly, an SDSU student, says this bill would not have stopped the event in question. He says other possible impacts remain unknown.’
Brookings Senator Tim Reed made the motion to kill the bill.
The measure was killed on a 4-3 vote. It had earlier made it through the House.
