PIERRE, S.D. (WNAX) – Heavy early voting could create some backups on election day that may spill over into the counting process.
South Dakota Secretary of State Steve Barnett says county auditors have to wait to process the early ballots.
Over 30 percent of registered voters have already cast ballots for next month’s election.
Barnett is confident that most results will be totaled up on election night.
Primary election results from Minnehaha County weren’t finished until the next afternoon. Barnett says changes have been made to avoid that.
Minnehaha County Auditor Bob Litz has said he plans to stop counting on election night to give poll workers a break and finish the next day.
