Hostage situation at Sioux Falls convenience store lead to death of suspect

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.(KELO)- A hostage incident at a Sioux Falls convenience store early Wednesday morning leaves the suspect dead.

Sioux Falls Police Chief Jon Thum says it all began when an officer stopped at the store for food at about three this morning.

The officer returned fire and took cover behind his squad car…calling in extra help.

Chief Thum says SWAT teams from the police department and the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s office responded.

The SWAT officer shot the suspect, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect was identified as 26-year-old Daniel Augustine, according to Attorney General Marty Jackley.

No officers or hostages were injured.

The state division of Criminal Investigation will review the incident.
There were 3 hostages inside the convenience store. The one who was close to the suspect, one who was hiding deeper into the store, and a third who escaped.
