House bill to change how pastureland was taxed defeated in Senate Committee

PIERRE, S.D.(WNAX)- A bill that would change how pastureland is assessed and taxed was heard in the South Dakota Senate Taxation Committee.

Sponsor, Representative Trish Ladner of Hot Springs, says the bill would correct most of the problems with assessing and taxing grasslands.

James Halverson, Executive Director of the South Dakota Stockgrowers, told the Senators the current system is not working.

Wade Pogany, Executive Director of the Associated School Boards, said the bill would harm some west river school districts.

After a do pass motion failed for lack of a second, the committee voted six to one to send the bill to the 41st day, effectively killing it.
