PIERRE, S.D.(HubCityRadio)- On Monday, the House Commerce and Energy Committee heard testimony on SB110. The bill regulate how broadband internet access service providers use customer data.
Prime sponsor of the bill was District 1 Senator Michael Rohl.
Rohl reminds the committee that in 2017 President Trump rolled back the federal regulations believing this is a state issue.
Rohl believes personal date is something the legislature should try to protect.
Justin Smith with Midco and the Greater Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce told the committee that this bill is a solution in search of a problem.
Kara Semmler with South Dakota Telecommunication Association spoke about the regulations that are already in place.
Semmler believes this bill will only complicate the process.
The South Dakota Public Utilities Commission had no official stance on this bill but Commissioner Chris Nelson was asked what role they would have if this passed.
The committee tried to pass it to the floor. That was defeated on a 9-3 vote. They instead sent it to the 41st day on 10-2 vote.
